The Chief Minister of Assam backs delimitation, rejects food restriction claims amid Bengal poll campaign

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma intensified his attack on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, accusing her of “creating an atmosphere of fear” through her speeches rather than focusing on governance. The Chief Minister claims Banerjee “keeps complaining” about Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah instead of addressing state issues.
At the same time, backing the proposed delimitation exercise, the Chief Minister asserted that eastern states such as Assam, West Bengal, Bihar and Odisha stand to gain significantly. “The eastern block will benefit the most,” he said, pointing to a likely rise in parliamentary representation.
Meanwhile, rejecting allegations of a potential meat ban under BJP rule, the Chief Minister termed the claims “baseless,” stating that no such restrictions exist in BJP-ruled states. He remarked that “everyone eats non-vegetarian food,” and accused the Opposition of creating unnecessary fear.
Moreover, in a post on X, the Chief Minister also invited Banerjee to nominate a representative for a “fish-eating competition,” saying it would put an end to what he described as “rumour mongering.” He clarified that while fish and meat consumption remain unrestricted, certain regulations on beef continue as per existing laws.
Adding to his criticism, the Chief Minister alleged that illegal infiltration from Bangladesh remains a serious concern in West Bengal. He claimed BJP-ruled states have taken firm action, but the situation persists in Bengal. He further alleged that the TMC supports illegal cattle smuggling to Bangladesh for financial gains and stressed that stronger border control and fencing are essential to address both security and demographic concerns.
The Chief Minister projected a decisive electoral outcome, stating that the BJP is poised to win “100 seats in Assam and 200 in West Bengal” in the upcoming elections.
With West Bengal heading into a two-phase election on April 23 and 29, the Chief Minister expressed confidence in a strong BJP performance, predicting significant electoral gains.
