The proposed academy near Guwahati aims to provide aspiring boxers with quality training facilities and nurture the next generation of sporting talent

Guwahati: The Assam Cabinet on Friday, October 9, approved a concession reducing the land premium to Re 1 for a four-bigha plot in Palasbari Revenue Circle for setting up a boxing academy named after Olympic medallist Lovlina Borgohain.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the decision following the cabinet meeting, saying the academy would help nurture young boxing talent and provide aspiring athletes with quality training facilities.
“In today’s meeting of Assam Cabinet, we cleared the decks for setting up of a Lovlina Boxing Academy near Guwahati, so that the next gen of Assam’s Lovlinas can get the best training and make the nation proud,” the Chief Minister said in a post on X.
The decision comes days after Borgohain won gold in the women’s 75kg boxing category at the Asian Games in Japan. She defeated China’s Bao Ziyi 5-0 in the final on October 2, securing the title on her birthday.
On October 6, the Chief Minister felicitated the boxer at Lok Sewa Bhawan and presented her with a cheque for Rs 50 lakh in recognition of her achievement.
The Tokyo Olympics bronze medallist became only the second Indian woman boxer to win Asian Games gold, following MC Mary Kom’s achievement in 2014.
The proposed academy is expected to strengthen Assam’s sporting infrastructure and create better opportunities for emerging boxers.
