15 Years, One Promise, One Gold: The Lovlina Borgohain Story Behind the Medal

Assam boxer Lovlina Borgohain wins her maiden Asian Games gold on her 29th birthday, fulfilling her promise to turn her previous silver into gold

Guwahati: Assam’s Lovlina Borgohain turned a promise made after her previous Asian Games campaign into reality on Friday, winning her maiden Asian Games gold medal on her 29th birthday.

Lovlina defeated China’s Bao Ziyi 5-0 in the women’s 75kg final at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, converting the silver she won at the previous edition into gold. Her father, Tiken Borgohain, recalled that Lovlina had repeatedly told the family she wanted to “change the colour of her medal to gold”.

Lovlina’s mother, Mamoni Borgohain, said the family’s happiness was overwhelming, particularly because the victory came on Lovlina’s birthday. She said her daughter had worked towards the goal for around 15 years.

For Lovlina, the triumph also marked a comeback from a difficult period following the 2024 Paris Olympics, where she missed out on a medal. “After 2024 Paris, I was very sad. I did not feel like it. At that time, life was very hard,” she said.

She then decided to rebuild from the basics and focus on giving her best rather than worrying about the result. “I just thought that I have to live my game. I have to give my 100 per cent,” she said.

The gold also made Lovlina only the second Indian woman boxer after MC Mary Kom to win an Asian Games gold. Her parents said Lovlina’s next major ambition is an Olympic gold medal. For now, her focus will turn to the upcoming World Championships.
