Nimisha Thakuria Death Case: Assam CM Says Probe will Examine Her Digital Trail and Movements

Assam CM says probe will consider the Gauhati University student’s digital activity, movements and parents’ statements as police investigate her death

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said investigators will examine Nimisha Thakuria’s social media activity, phone calls, movements and other available evidence as they probe the Gauhati University student’s death at a Guwahati homestay.

The Chief Minister said Nimisha was from his constituency and assured that he would follow up on the investigation to ensure the probe is conducted properly. He said investigators would also consider statements made by her parents in the aftermath of the incident.

Nimisha Thakuria was a Sociology student at Gauhati University, was found unconscious at a homestay in the Dharapur-Garal area on September 26 and was later declared dead at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital. Ashiq Ali, who was staying with her, has been arrested in connection with the case and was produced before a court on Monday. Police are examining the circumstances surrounding her death.

Police have collected the homestay’s records, CCTV footage and Nimisha’s mobile phone, while forensic and post-mortem findings are awaited. Ali’s claim that Nimisha died by suicide has not been established, with investigators examining all possible angles.

Asked whether the case could involve a “love jihad” angle, the Chief Minister said Nimisha was an adult and urged people to be responsible and follow family and social values. The investigation has not established such an angle.
