Kishor Nath denies charges, calls the incident “politically motivated” as probe begins

West Bengal: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate from Barkhola in Assam’s Cachar district was detained on Wednesday night in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district. Nath was apprehended following allegations of distributing cash during the ongoing election campaign.
The BJP candidate had travelled to Hingalganj to support BJP candidate Rekha Patra. The local residents reportedly intercepted him, alleging that money was being handed out to voters under the cover of darkness. According to the initial reports, he was stopped along with his vehicle, after which Police personnel from Hingalganj Police Station reached the spot and took him into the custody.
Subsequently, a video claimed to capture the incident surfaced on social media, quickly gaining attention and drawing reactions, particularly in Assam’s Barrak Valley.
However, the BJP candidate strongly rejected the allegations, describing them as “baseless.” He stated that his visit was religious in nature and states, “I had gone to a temple. A party worker was handing over Rs 5,000 to a kirtan committee, not to voters.”
Moreover, he alleged that political opponents engineered the situation to damage his reputation. Nath further claimed that he himself informed the police when tensions escalated.
Meanwhile, police officials have not yet issued a detailed statement. Authorities have confirmed that an investigation is underway to ascertain the facts surrounding the incident.
