Nagaon Bypoll: Devasish Sharma Marches Towards Big Win with 1.57 Lakh-Vote Lead

The BJP candidate has secured 6,91,804 votes, while AIUDF chief Mohammed Badruddin Ajmal is in second place with 5,34,000 votes

Nagaon: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Devasish Sharma has taken a lead of 1,57,804 votes over All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) chief Mohammed Badruddin Ajmal in the Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election, according to the latest figures.

Sharma has received 6,91,804 votes, accounting for 49.9% of the votes. Ajmal is trailing with 5,34,000 votes, representing 38.52%. Congress candidate Sibamoni Bora is in third place with 1,24,081 votes, securing 8.95% of the votes counted.

The by-election was held on October 6 following the resignation of former Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi, who switched to the BJP. The contest has primarily been between Sharma, Ajmal and Bora.

With Sharma maintaining a substantial lead over Ajmal, the BJP candidate remains ahead in the three-cornered contest. The latest figures indicate a gap of more than 1.57 lakh votes between the two leading candidates.

Reacting to the party’s performance on October 9, Raijor Dal MLA Akhil Gogoi called it a “historic defeat” and demanded the resignation of Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi. “Last time, Congress won by a margin of 2.5 lakh votes. This time, even securing 2.5 lakh votes will be a struggle,” he said.

The Raijor Dal Leader also claimed that Congress’s minority vote share had declined from 25% to 5%, attributing the party’s poor performance partly to the alleged shift in minority support.

Targeting the state Congress leadership, he said Gaurav Gogoi had failed to lead the party effectively and should step down immediately. “I believe the Congress president, Gaurav Gogoi, has failed completely. In my opinion, he should resign from the post of State Congress president this very day,” he said.
