Nagaon: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Devashish Sharma is leading in the Nagaon Lok Sabha bypoll by 82,009 votes over his nearest rival, AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal, according to the latest counting figures.

Sharma has secured 2,60,942 votes, accounting for 52.46 per cent of the votes recorded so far. Ajmal is trailing with 1,78,933 votes, or 35.97 per cent, while Congress candidate Sibamoni Bora has received 44,566 votes, representing 8.96 per cent.

The latest figures place Sharma comfortably ahead in the three-way contest, with Ajmal in second place and Bora trailing behind.

Counting began at 8 am on Friday amid tight security at two centres in Nagaon district, Dawson Higher Secondary School and Government Boys’ School. Postal ballots were taken up first, followed by votes recorded in electronic voting machines (EVMs).

The bypoll was held on October 6 to fill the vacancy in the Nagaon parliamentary constituency. Fifteen candidates were in the fray, and voter turnout stood at around 76 per cent.

Counting trends may change as further rounds are completed. The final outcome will be confirmed by the Election Commission after the counting process concludes.
