The Raijor Dal chief is seeking immediate relief, compensation and a CBI probe into the causes of the floods
Guwahati: Raijor Dal president and Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi has called for a mass gathering in Guwahati on September 23, demanding immediate relief and compensation for families affected by the floods in Upper Assam.
The protest is scheduled at Chachal from 10 am and is expected to draw flood-affected residents from Sivasagar, Jorhat and Charaideo, along with supporters, Gogoi said.
Gogoi has alleged that promised immediate relief has not reached all affected families. Among the demands is Rs 10 lakh compensation for families whose homes and belongings were destroyed in the floods.
Raijor Dal is also demanding an end to alleged irregularities in relief distribution, immediate assistance for all affected families and a CBI inquiry into the causes of the floods.
Gogoi said the party had obtained permission for the programme and warned that protests would be intensified if the demands were not addressed. The MLA said he had earlier observed a fast on September 17 and submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister seeking immediate relief.
Meanwhile, tension was reported outside Sivasagar railway station, where Raijor Dal members and residents travelling to Guwahati for the protest alleged that police and security personnel stopped some passengers. A woman at the station also alleged that Aadhaar cards were being checked.
