Gauhati High Court Grants Bail to Amritprabha Mahanta in Zubeen Garg Death Case

Mahanta is the first accused in the main investigation to secure bail; her release is subject to acceptance of the bail bond by the trial court

Guwahati: The Gauhati High Court on Friday granted bail to Amritprabha Mahanta, one of the seven accused in connection with the death of Assamese singer Zubeen Garg. The court reserved its order after concluding hearings on Mahanta’s bail plea on Wednesday, following several days of arguments.

Mahanta was arrested by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) on October 2 last year and is currently lodged in Haflong Jail. She is the first accused in the main investigation into Garg’s death to secure bail. Two personal security officers attached to the singer had earlier obtained bail in a separate case concerning alleged financial transactions.

Speaking to reporters outside the court, the public prosecutor said the prosecution was awaiting the detailed order to understand the grounds for the decision. “We are yet to receive the reasons behind the court’s decision. We expect to get the detailed order shortly,” the prosecutor said.

The bail was granted against a bond of Rs 50,000 and two sureties of the same amount. Mahanta will not be released immediately, as her bail bond must first be submitted to and accepted by the trial court.

The prosecutor added that the state government would decide whether to challenge the order after reviewing the detailed ruling. He said he would communicate with the government, which would consult the police department before deciding on the next course of action.
