Nagaon: Counting for the Nagaon Lok Sabha bypoll began at 8 am on Friday amid tight security, with the contest between the BJP, Congress and AIUDF moving towards its final verdict.

The counting process began with postal ballots, followed by votes recorded in electronic voting machines (EVMs). Counting is being conducted at Dawson Higher Secondary School and Government Boys’ School in Nagaon district, with 14 counting tables at each centre.

According to District Commissioner Aranyak Saikia, counting for the Samaguri, Dhing and Rupohihat Assembly segments is taking place at Dawson Higher Secondary School, while Nagaon-Batadroba and Raha votes are being counted at Government Boys’ School.

The strong rooms were scheduled to open at 6 am in the presence of authorised representatives. Officials estimated that counting could take 18 to 22 rounds, depending on the Assembly segment.

The bypoll has drawn a three-way contest involving BJP candidate Devashish Sharma, Congress nominee Sibamoni Bora and AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal, among 15 candidates in the fray.

Polling took place on October 6, recording around 76 per cent turnout. The results will determine who represents the Nagaon parliamentary constituency.
