Around 19.05 lakh electors were eligible to vote across 2,312 polling stations as BJP, Congress and AIUDF faced off in a three-way contest

Nagaon: Polling for the Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election in Assam concluded peacefully at 5 pm on Tuesday, with around 76 per cent of the 19.05 lakh electors casting their votes, according to an election official.
The final turnout is expected to rise as voters who had entered polling stations before the closure of voting were allowed to exercise their franchise.
Voting began at 7 am across the constituency’s eight Assembly segments. Samaguri recorded the highest turnout at 80.22 per cent, while Raha registered the lowest at 70.27 per cent.
Among the other segments, Laharighat recorded 78.88 per cent, Dhing 77.93 per cent, Rupohihat 77.67 per cent, Jagiroad 76.61 per cent, Morigaon 72.84 per cent and Nagaon-Batadraba 72.01 per cent.
The polling process remained largely peaceful, with minor EVM glitches reported at some booths. Officials said the affected machines were replaced and voting continued.
The bypoll saw 15 candidates in the fray, with the principal contest involving BJP’s Devashish Sharma, Congress’ Sibamoni Bora and AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal.
Congress leader Rakibul Hussain later alleged that unidentified people had entered several polling stations in Samaguri and accused the BJP of attempting to rig the election. The allegations were not independently established.
The administration had identified 624 polling stations as sensitive, with security arrangements put in place across the constituency.
The by-election was necessitated after former Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi resigned from the Lok Sabha and later contested and won the Dispur Assembly seat on a BJP ticket.
Counting of votes will take place on October 9.
