Former Nagaon DC joins the BJP alongside journalists Lenin Saurav Bora and Gunjan Kalita as the party weighs its candidates for the Lok Sabha bypoll
Nagaon: Former Nagaon District Commissioner Devashish Sharma and journalists Lenin Saurav Bora and Gunjan Kalita joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday, days ahead of the Nagaon Lok Sabha bypoll.
The three joined the party at a programme attended by Assam BJP president Dilip Saikia, Cabinet Ministers Piyush Hazarika, Jayanta Malla Baruah and Kaushik Rai, Nagaon MLA Rupak Sharma and other senior leaders.
Sharma’s entry has sparked speculation that he could be considered for the BJP’s Nagaon bypoll ticket. However, Saikia said Sharma had not sought a ticket before joining the party. “We have a panel of candidates,” he said, adding that discussions over the election were already underway.
Saikia said the party could consider Sharma if he expresses interest or if people in Nagaon seek his candidature. He added that both the state and central leadership would decide Sharma’s future organisational responsibility.
Welcoming his induction, Saikia highlighted Sharma’s administrative experience and association with Assam’s social and cultural life. He described the former bureaucrat as a sensitive person who had worked for the people of the state and said his joining would strengthen the party.
The induction comes as political activity intensifies in Nagaon ahead of the bypoll, with parties stepping up preparations for the contest.
