Devashish Sharma’s voluntary retirement from government service has sparked speculation over his reported political entry and possible candidature in the Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election
Nagaon: Nagaon District Commissioner Devashish Sharma, IAS, has taken voluntary retirement from government service after the Assam government accepted his request under the Voluntary Retirement Scheme (VRS).
Sharma had reportedly applied for voluntary retirement a few days ago, citing his decision to step away from active government service. The state government has now formally accepted his request, ending his tenure as Nagaon’s administrative head.
Sharma was appointed Nagaon District Commissioner on December 24, 2025. Before his Nagaon posting, he served as District Commissioner of Morigaon and was also posted as Resident Commissioner of Assam House in Mumbai. His retirement has triggered political speculation, with credible sources claiming that Sharma is likely to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Sources further indicated that Sharma may contest the upcoming Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election on a BJP ticket after formally joining the party. However, neither Sharma nor the BJP has made any official announcement regarding his political plans.
The Nagaon Lok Sabha seat fell vacant after Pradyut Bordoloi resigned as MP and later joined the BJP. The Election Commission is yet to announce the detailed schedule for the by-election, while political parties are expected to finalise their candidates.
