NPP state president says the government has 33 MLAs and will complete its full term despite reports of nine UDP legislators planning to join the BJP
Shillong: Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister and NPP state president Prestone Tynsong on Tuesday dismissed reports of nine United Democratic Party (UDP) MLAs likely to join the BJP, saying the MDA government remains secure with the NPP holding a majority on its own.
Tynsong said the reports had surfaced only in the media and had not been raised within the alliance. He attributed the developments to possible “internal issues” within the UDP and said the NPP would not interfere in another party’s internal matters.
“Our strength alone is 33. We need 30-31 to form the government, so we have already crossed that mark,” Tynsong said, asserting that the government was “strong” and “stable” and would complete its term till 2028 and beyond. His remarks came on the sidelines of the NPP’s 14th Foundation Day celebrations, held on the birth anniversary of party founder Purno A Sangma.
Reflecting on the party’s journey, Tynsong said the NPP had taken up several long-pending issues since coming to power in 2018, including the Meghalaya-Assam boundary dispute, the Them Metor issue, ILP, language and uranium mining. He said the government would continue addressing issues concerning the safety, security and interests of Meghalaya’s tribal population.
