India-Belgium Ties Gain Momentum as Modi Highlights 7.8% Growth, New Global Opportunities

Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted India’s resilient economic performance as he held talks with Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever on trade, defence, technology and clean energy

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said India’s 7.8 per cent economic growth in the latest quarter was creating confidence and new opportunities for the global economy as he held wide-ranging talks with Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever.

Modi said India had maintained its economic momentum despite global uncertainty, conflicts and disruptions affecting food, fuel and supply chains. He said the country’s growth performance reflected its resilience amid a challenging international environment.

India’s economy grew 7.8 per cent in the April-June quarter of 2026-27, keeping the country among the world’s fastest-growing major economies.

The talks also focused on expanding India-Belgium cooperation in defence, critical minerals, clean energy and emerging technologies. Modi described defence and security as a key pillar of bilateral ties, with both sides agreeing to strengthen military exchanges, training, co-development and co-production.

The two countries also agreed to deepen cooperation in critical minerals, semiconductor technology and renewable energy. India and Belgium are expected to conclude a Migration and Mobility Partnership Agreement to facilitate talent movement.

Modi said both countries supported dialogue and diplomacy to resolve conflicts in Ukraine and West Asia and reaffirmed their commitment to combating terrorism.

Belgium’s De Wever called the India-EU free trade agreement a major milestone, saying bilateral ties were becoming broader and more strategic.
