The Chakma Development Foundation of India has sought protection for Chakma and Hajong communities during the remaining electoral revision hearings in Changlang district
Itanagar: The Chakma Development Foundation of India (CDFI) has approached the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) after Chakma electors were allegedly prevented from attending Special Intensive Revision (SIR) hearings in Arunachal Pradesh’s Changlang district.
According to the CDFI, protests by members of the All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union disrupted the hearing at Bordumsa on Thursday. The organisation also alleged that the office of the Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) was damaged during the disturbances.
The proceedings had remained incomplete on Wednesday following disruptions at the venue. An official notice said the ERO had disposed of 222 of the 252 Form-6 applications and 150 of the 303 Form-7 applications linked to the 49/33-Bijoypur polling station.
The remaining 30 Form-6 and 153 Form-7 applications were scheduled for hearing on Thursday. However, the CDFI claimed that the proceedings were disrupted again.
CDFI founder Suhas Chakma termed the repeated disturbances a failure of the state government and said the situation should not have been allowed to escalate.
In its complaint, the organisation sought enforcement of a 1996 Supreme Court judgment directing the Arunachal Pradesh government to protect the life and personal liberty of Chakmas and prevent their forcible eviction by organised groups.
The CDFI has urged the NHRC to direct the Union Home Ministry, Arunachal Pradesh government and Election Commission of India to ensure the safety of Chakmas and Hajongs during the remaining SIR hearings.
