Seven surrendered insurgent groups have blocked key road and rail routes in Tripura, demanding implementation of the September 2024 peace accord and action on 11 issues
Agartala: Seven surrendered insurgent groups in Tripura launched a 72-hour blockade of the Assam-Agartala National Highway on September 4, disrupting traffic and demanding implementation of commitments under the September 2024 tripartite peace accord.
Members and supporters of the National Liberation Front of Tripura (Original), NLFT (Parimal Debbarma), All Tripura Tiger Force (ATTF), NLFT (Nayan Bashi), Joint Action Rehabilitation Committee, Joint Action Committee and ATTF (Old) began the blockade at Chandra Sadhupada in Baramura.
Protesters occupied the highway and set tyres on fire, leaving vehicles stranded. Similar protests were reported at Bighudas along the railway route and Khowai Chowmuhani. Security was tightened, while West Tripura SP Namit Pathak reached the protest site and officials held talks with protesters.
NLFT leader Thomas Tripura said the groups had long sought implementation of agreements with the Centre and Tripura government. He claimed the 2024 accord has a four-year implementation period ending in 2028 and said insufficient progress prompted the agitation.
Key demands include protection and official recognition of surrendered cadres, implementation of the peace accord, filling pending ST vacancies, withdrawal of cases against returnees and implementation of SEDP projects.
The groups also seek safeguards for Tiprasa land, separate administration, Roman script for Kokborok, common customary law, restoration of traditional village names and transfer of land powers to the TTAADC. The blockade is set to continue for 72 hours unless the issues are addressed.
