Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma highlights the Karbi Peace Accord’s role in strengthening peace, development and stability in Karbi Anglong five years after its signing
Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has highlighted the role of the Karbi Peace Accord in strengthening peace and accelerating development in Karbi Anglong as the agreement marks its fifth anniversary.
The Chief Minister said the accord has created a more secure and stable environment, allowing greater focus on development and public welfare. He described the 2021 settlement as a major turning point for Karbi Anglong, a region that had witnessed years of violence, killings and abductions linked to demands for a separate homeland.
Signed in New Delhi in 2021 between the Centre, Assam government and five major Karbi insurgent groups, the accord sought to address the concerns and aspirations of the Karbi community while maintaining Assam’s territorial integrity.
According to the Chief Minister, progress since the accord is visible in infrastructure, tribal welfare, employment opportunities, cultural activities and support for local entrepreneurs. The improved security situation has also created conditions for increased economic activity and investment.
The Chief Minister said the experience of Karbi Anglong shows how dialogue, political engagement and mutual understanding can help resolve long-standing conflicts. He credited the people and stakeholders involved in the peace process.
The Chief Minister said the Assam government remains committed to accelerating development while protecting Karbi Anglong’s cultural and social identity, focusing on stability, prosperity, and sustainable growth.
