“Did He Make Me Win?”: Rakibul Hussain Questions Akhil Gogoi’s Political Claims

Congress MP Rakibul Hussain questions Akhil Gogoi’s political claims as the two leaders trade sharp remarks amid the Congress-Raijor Dal fallout

Guwahati: Congress MP Rakibul Hussain on September 4 hit back at Raijor Dal MLA Akhil Gogoi, questioning his claim to political success and accusing him of overlooking the Congress leaders who supported his political platform.

Speaking at Jogighopa in Assam’s Bongaigaon district, Hussain said he had spent 14-15 years in active politics and had also served as a minister. Referring to Gogoi’s criticism, he questioned whether the Raijor Dal MLA had helped him win elections during that period.

Hussain further claimed that Congress had provided Gogoi with a political platform by organising meetings where Gogoi addressed supporters. He said Gogoi later believed that he alone was responsible for electoral victories.

The remarks came amid a continuing political exchange between Congress and Gogoi following the Congress decision to end its alliance with Raijor Dal.

Gogoi had recently alleged that Hussain’s declared assets rose from Rs 4.38 crore in 2016 to Rs 25.29 crore in 2024, an increase of 477 per cent. He questioned the rise during the BJP’s tenure in Assam. The figures are based on election affidavits and, by themselves, do not establish wrongdoing or indicate the source of the increase.

Hussain’s latest remarks have added another layer to the growing political confrontation between the Congress leader and Gogoi.
