Tipra Motha Party accounts for 1,148 of the unopposed victories, while BJP candidates secure 31 seats ahead of the September 28 elections
Agartala: Candidates of the ruling alliance of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Tipra Motha Party (TMP) have been elected unopposed in 1,179 of the 4,597 seats in the ongoing Village Committee elections under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), according to State Election Commission data.
The figure represents nearly 25 per cent of the total seats. TMP candidates account for 1,148 of the unopposed victories, while BJP candidates have secured 31 seats without a contest.
The highest number of unopposed TMP candidates was recorded in Jampuijala block of Sepahijala district, with 212 candidates. Hezamara in West Tripura followed with 149, while 109 were elected unopposed in Belbari.
Other major figures include 104 in Padmabil, 91 in Mandwi, 80 in Lefunga, 82 in Tulashikhar and 67 in Mungiakami. Overall, 10,889 nomination papers were submitted. TMP filed 4,361 nominations, followed by CPI(M) with 2,456 and BJP with 1,971.
The last date for withdrawal of nominations is September 11. Polling is scheduled for September 28, with counting on October 5. The election process is expected to conclude by October 8.
The Village Committee elections are being held after a 10-year gap following the intervention of the Supreme Court.
