The firing allegedly followed a confrontation over land encroachment in Dhemaji, with police investigating and additional forces deployed to prevent escalation
Dhemaji: Eleven Assam residents, including three critically injured, were wounded after unidentified armed persons allegedly opened fire along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border in Dhemaji district on August 11.
The incident occurred in Mingmang Badati under Gogamukh Revenue Circle amid allegations of land encroachment along the inter-state boundary.
According to injured villagers, around 18 people were working in the area when armed men in uniform approached them and allegedly opened fire following a confrontation over land. Several villagers reportedly escaped unharmed.
The injured were initially taken to Gogamukh Rural Hospital. Seven were later shifted to Dhemaji Civil Hospital, while three critically injured persons were referred to Assam Medical College and Hospital in Dibrugarh.
Residents alleged repeated attempts at encroachment from the Arunachal Pradesh side and claimed that police personnel in uniform were among those who opened fire.
Assam Police said the allegations had not been verified and an investigation was underway. Police will also hold discussions with their Arunachal Pradesh counterparts. A large police force has been deployed in the area.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma directed senior officials to investigate and coordinate with Arunachal Pradesh authorities. He described the incident as a local land dispute rather than an interstate conflict, saying the situation remained peaceful.
