Assam’s flood death toll rises to 101, with 1.26 lakh people affected across 10 districts. Golaghat remains the worst-hit as relief and rescue operations continue
Guwahti: The death toll from Assam’s ongoing floods has risen to 101, with 1,26,431 people affected across 10 districts, according to the Assam Flood Report dated August 10.
The Disaster Reporting and Information Management System (DRIMS) said Nagaon, Golaghat, Sivasagar, Hojai, Darrang, Karbi Anglong, Lakhimpur, Cachar, Charaideo and Jorhat remain affected. Floodwaters have impacted 25 revenue circles and 458 villages.
Golaghat continues to be the worst-affected district, with 71,061 people affected, followed by Sivasagar with 21,600 and Nagaon with 16,908. Jorhat has reported 13,166 affected people.
Floodwaters have submerged 11,287.04 hectares of agricultural land. Nagaon recorded the highest crop damage at 4,194.1 hectares, followed by Sivasagar with 2,210 hectares and Golaghat with 2,040.94 hectares.
According to the Central Water Commission’s bulletin issued at 8 am on August 10, the Dhansiri (South) at Golaghat and Numaligarh, along with the Kushiyara at Sribhumi, were flowing above danger levels. No river, however, was above its highest flood level.
Authorities have opened 89 relief camps and distribution centres, with 8,447 people currently sheltering in relief camps, including 1,143 children.
The floods have damaged 168 houses fully or severely and another 364 partially. At least 24 road stretches and a bridge in Sivasagar’s Amguri revenue circle have also been damaged, while an embankment in Nagaon’s Samaguri has been affected.
Relief and rescue operations continue, with 58 boats deployed across affected areas. The boats have so far helped evacuate 40 people, while medical teams have been stationed at four locations.
