Heavy rainfall in Arunachal Pradesh swelled the Jiadhal River, inundating low-lying areas and sweeping away a house in Kamalpur-Dharmapur village
Guwahati: Fresh flooding triggered by the swollen Jiadhal River inundated parts of Assam’s Dhemaji district on Saturday morning, washing away a house and forcing the rescue of two family members.
The flooding followed heavy rainfall in the upper catchment areas of Arunachal Pradesh, causing the river to swell and send a fresh surge of water into downstream villages. Kamalpur-Dharmapur was among the worst-hit areas after a channel of the Jiadhal River breached its course, allowing floodwaters to enter the village.
The house of elderly resident Anima Hazarika was swept away by the strong current. Villagers rescued Hazarika and her ailing daughter before the rising waters could endanger their lives.
The latest flooding has renewed concerns over the recurring threat posed by the Jiadhal River, which frequently overflows during heavy rainfall in Arunachal Pradesh, leaving vulnerable riverbank villages in Dhemaji at risk of sudden flash floods.
