The Young Mizo Association urged election authorities to thoroughly review the draft electoral rolls under the Special Intensive Revision, alleging irregularities in voter digitisation and mapping
Aizwal: Mizoram’s largest civil society organisation, the Young Mizo Association (YMA), raised concerns over alleged discrepancies in the state’s draft electoral rolls prepared under the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) and called for a thorough review to ensure that only genuine citizens are included in the voter list.
The demand comes days after Mizoram Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Garima Gupta, who had dismissed concerns over an abnormal rise in voters, was transferred to Delhi.
Addressing a press conference, leaders of the Central Young Mizo Association (CYMA) said they had examined the draft electoral rolls published on July 4 and found what they described as “improbable” discrepancies in the digitisation of Enumeration Forms (EFs). The organisation also alleged irregularities in voter mapping after comparing the draft rolls with the 2005 SIR electoral rolls and population growth data.
CYMA president R. Lalngheta said the organisation would submit a representation seeking a detailed examination of the alleged discrepancies. The body urged Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) and Assistant Electoral Registration Officers (AEROs) to conduct the ongoing claims and objections process fairly and ensure that only eligible citizens are enrolled.
The YMA also appealed to its local branches, partner organisations and political parties to participate responsibly in the verification process.
Earlier, the Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP) had alleged abnormal voter growth in several villages, including a 376.92 per cent increase in a predominantly Chakma-inhabited village, while claiming that most Mizo-majority villages recorded comparatively modest increases.
