NPCC Demands Faster Naga Peace Process: Seeks Transparency on Assam-Nagaland Oil Pact

Congress committee urges early implementation of the peace accord and FNTA while questioning the undisclosed oil exploration agreement between Assam and Nagaland

Dimapur: The Political Affairs Committee (PAC) of the Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) has called for the early resolution of the long-pending Naga peace process, immediate operationalisation of the Frontier Nagaland Territorial Authority (FNTA), and greater transparency regarding a recently signed oil exploration agreement between Assam and Nagaland.

The resolutions were unanimously adopted during a PAC meeting held at Congress Bhavan in Kohima on June 25.

Expressing concern over the prolonged delay in implementing the Framework Agreement and the Agreed Position, the committee held both the Union government and the Nagaland government responsible for the lack of progress. It also criticised the state government’s proposal to appoint a minister-level political interlocutor, arguing that the move could further delay the peace process.

“The peace process must culminate in a broadly agreed settlement that ensures lasting peace, political stability and development for the people of Nagaland,” the committee said.

The PAC also termed the delay in operationalising the FNTA agreement as unacceptable and urged both the Centre and the state government to resolve pending issues without further delay to fulfil the aspirations of the Eastern Nagaland People’s Organisation (ENPO) areas.

The committee further raised concerns over a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding signed by Assam and Nagaland under the facilitation of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs for the resumption of crude oil and natural gas exploration in disputed border areas.

Demanding full disclosure of the agreement, the PAC cautioned that any arrangement affecting the land or revenue rights of Nagaland would not be accepted without complete transparency.
