Nagaland steps up rescue and relief efforts after the Mon landslide, with compensation announced for victims and emergency assistance extended to affected families

Dimapur: The Nagaland government announced a package of relief measures following the devastating landslide in Mon district that claimed several lives and caused extensive damage to homes, roads and public infrastructure. Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio announced an ex gratia of Rs 4 lakh for the next of kin of each deceased victim and Rs 74,000 for every injured person.
Expressing deep sorrow over the tragedy, which struck at around 6:30 am, the state government conveyed its condolences to the bereaved families and wished a speedy recovery to those injured.
Apart from Mon district, landslides, flooding and road disruptions have also been reported from Tuli subdivision in Mokokchung district and other parts of the state, damaging public infrastructure and private property.
Rescue and relief operations are being coordinated by the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA), District Disaster Management Authorities (DDMAs), district administrations, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Nagaland Police and other departments. Search and rescue teams are evacuating residents from vulnerable areas, restoring essential services and providing emergency assistance.
The government has assured food, temporary shelter, essential supplies and other relief benefits to eligible affected families. It has also directed all departments to remain on high alert, strengthen coordination and expedite restoration and rehabilitation work.
In a post on X, Chief Minister Rio said the government was closely monitoring the situation while the NSDMA, district administration, SDRF, Nagaland Police, Assam Rifles and local communities continued rescue operations.
Residents have been advised to avoid landslide-prone areas, follow official advisories and refrain from spreading unverified information.
