Activist says he will call off his fast only if the government accepts responsibility over NEET concerns and political leaders assure parliamentary discussion on education reforms
New Delhi: Activist and education reform advocate Sonam Wangchuk has said he is willing to end his hunger strike only if three conditions are met by the government and political leaders.
In a handwritten letter from Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital, where he is under medical supervision, Wangchuk alleged he was under “illegal detention” and claimed his freedom of movement, speech and communication had been restricted.
His first demand is that the government acknowledge what he described as serious failures in the education system, particularly in connection with the NEET paper leak controversy. Secondly, he wants political parties to assure that the issue will be raised in Parliament. Finally, he has asked senior political leaders to visit him personally and guarantee that the first two demands will be pursued, especially if his health prevents him from joining the proposed Parliament march.
Wangchuk began his indefinite fast on June 28 during the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP)-led protest at Jantar Mantar. He was shifted to Safdarjung Hospital on July 18 after doctors warned that his health had become critical.
Meanwhile, the Delhi High Court declined his wife Gitanjali Angmo’s plea to shift him to a private hospital, observing that he remains under continuous medical supervision.
