Authorities have diverted light vehicles and intensified restoration work to ensure safety along the vulnerable highway stretch
Dimapur: The Kohima district administration has restricted the movement of heavy commercial vehicles along a vulnerable stretch of National Highway-2 amid continuous road sinking and falling debris from adjoining hill slopes.
Kohima District Magistrate B Henok Buchem said the affected section between Chainage Km 191+840 and Km 192+100 at the Phesama Sinking Zone has become unsafe due to road subsidence and intermittent landslides.
Under the latest order, heavy commercial vehicles travelling towards Manipur or Jakhama subdivision will be stopped at Peducha under Sechu Zubza subdivision. Their movement will be regulated and vehicles released periodically depending on restoration progress and road conditions.
Manipur-bound vehicles have been advised to use the alternate route through Peren district. The Kohima-Jessami and Chakhabama-Zunheboto roads may be used during emergencies. Light motor vehicles will continue to use the Phesama-Kisama-Kigwema diversion via Rhododendron Resort for two-way traffic.
The National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited has been directed to deploy maximum machinery and manpower for daily restoration work from 6 am, focusing on debris clearance and road stabilisation. Pedestrians have also been advised to avoid the affected landslide section.
