Gaurav Gogoi criticised the BJP’s governance record, alleging democratic erosion, political defections and lack of accountability on key national and state issues

Guwahati: Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Gaurav Gogoi launched a sharp attack on the BJP, alleging that the party has strengthened its political position through defections while weakening democratic institutions across the country.
Responding to queries on Prime Minister Narendra Modi completing 12 consecutive years in office, Gogoi claimed that the BJP’s political strategy has increasingly revolved around engineering splits in opposition parties. “The BJP has weakened democracy and reduced politics to a game of breaking and poaching parties. The same has happened in Assam,” Gogoi said.
The Congress leader also raised concerns over media independence, questioning why Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma continues to hold the Information and Public Relations portfolio. “The BJP wants to control the media. There are growing concerns about how long media freedom will survive under such circumstances,” he alleged.
Additionally, Gogoi accused the state government of rewarding individuals facing allegations of corruption and involvement in syndicate-related activities with important ministerial responsibilities.
Turning to national issues, he criticised Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the NEET paper leak controversy, arguing that no moral responsibility had been accepted despite widespread concerns.
Gogoi further questioned the absence of a clear timeline for granting Scheduled Tribe status to six communities in Assam and criticised the rejection of a Congress Rajya Sabha nomination in Madhya Pradesh.
Meanwhile, he said the Congress has begun a series of organisational review meetings across Assam to strengthen its grassroots network ahead of future political challenges.
