Assam Targets Poverty Reduction, Jobs Push Under ‘Viksit Assam’ Vision

CM Himanta Biswa Sarma highlights revenue surplus, rising GDP contribution and major infrastructure expansion plans after NDA’s sweeping electoral win

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma outlined an ambitious roadmap for a “Viksit Assam,” focusing on economic expansion, fiscal discipline and large-scale infrastructure growth over the next five years.

Backed by the BJP-led NDA’s massive victory in the Assembly elections, where the alliance secured 102 of 126 seats, the Chief Minister said the government aims to reduce Assam’s below-poverty-line population to under 3 per cent through employment generation and sustained development.

Sharing economic indicators on social media, the Chief Minister highlighted Assam’s fiscal performance, stating that the state has maintained a revenue surplus for five consecutive years while steadily increasing its contribution to the national economy.

“A Viksit Assam rests on the foundations of fiscal prudence and sustained economic expansion,” the Chief Minister posted on his social media platform.

According to figures shared by the government, Assam’s contribution to India’s GDP rose from 1.71 per cent in 2020–21 to 1.95 per cent in 2024–25. The state’s Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) has also expanded to Rs 6.43 lakh crore.

The government’s future roadmap includes creating two lakh government jobs, developing 3,200 MW of thermal power capacity and adding 4,200 MW through hydroelectric projects to make Assam energy surplus.

Additionally, the administration plans to establish one medical college, one university and one engineering college in every district to strengthen education and healthcare infrastructure.

The Chief Minister described the economic indicators as signs of an “Atal, Avichal, Agragami Assam,” reflecting stable and growth-oriented governance.
