Nominations For Meghalaya Rajya Sabha Poll Begin June 1: Voting On June 18

Nomination process will begin on June 1 as the Election Commission finalises schedule for Meghalaya’s lone Rajya Sabha election

Shillong : Meghalaya will elect its sole Rajya Sabha representative on June 18, with voting and counting scheduled to take place on the same day under the Election Commission of India’s biennial election programme.

Announcing the schedule, Chief Electoral Officer B. D. R. Tiwari said the official notification for the election will be issued on June 1. Candidates can submit nomination papers till June 8, while scrutiny will be conducted on June 9. The final date for withdrawal of candidature has been fixed for June 11.

Polling will be held from 9 am to 4 pm on June 18, followed by counting at 5 pm. Officials said the entire election process is expected to conclude by June 20.

Ahead of the polls, election authorities held a meeting with political parties in Shillong to explain nomination procedures, ballot rules and the voting system based on proportional representation through a single transferable vote.

Officials also briefed parties on Supreme Court and Election Commission guidelines regarding disclosure of criminal antecedents by candidates.

Meanwhile, legislators belonging to recognised parties have been allowed to display marked ballots only to authorised party agents, while independent MLAs cannot show their ballots to any agent.

The Election Commission has simultaneously announced Rajya Sabha elections for seats in Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram, along with several other states across the country.
