EC Announces Rajya Sabha Polls: Northeast to Vote on June 18

Manipur, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram will each elect one member as the Election Commission releases the schedule for upcoming Rajya Sabha elections

New Delhi: The Election Commission of India on May 22 announced elections for 24 Rajya Sabha seats spread across 10 states, with polling scheduled for June 18.

Among the states heading to polls are four from the Northeast, Manipur, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram, each set to elect one representative to the Upper House of Parliament.

The elections are being conducted due to the retirement of sitting Rajya Sabha members between June 21 and July 19, the Commission stated. June 8 has been fixed as the final date for filing nominations.

Outside the Northeast, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat and Karnataka will elect four members each, while Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan will vote for three seats each. Jharkhand will elect two members.

Several senior leaders are set to retire from the Rajya Sabha, including former Prime Minister H. D. Deve Gowda and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge from Karnataka. Union ministers Ravneet Singh and George Kurian are also among those completing their terms.

The Commission additionally announced bypolls for one Rajya Sabha seat each in Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu.
