Student body staged demonstrations in Nagaon, Tinsukia and Tamulpur, alleging that inflation has pushed ordinary families into deeper financial distress

Guwahati: All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), on May 22, stepped up its statewide agitation against the rising prices of essential commodities, petroleum products and life-saving medicines by organising coordinated protest rallies across multiple districts of Assam.
Responding to what it described as “anti-people” price hikes, AASU accused the government of failing to control inflation and said the increasing cost of living was severely affecting middle-class families, daily wage earners and economically weaker sections.
In Morigaon, members of the district unit staged a protest march carrying banners, placards and symbolic LPG cylinders while raising slogans against inflation and the rising cost of living. Protesters demanded immediate steps to control prices of petrol, diesel, cooking gas, medicines and other daily necessities.
A similar demonstration unfolded in Tinsukia, where hundreds of AASU activists marched from College Road to Thana Chariali while raising slogans against the sharp increase in fuel, food and medicine prices. Protesters warned that the organisation would intensify its agitation if corrective steps were not taken soon.
In Nagaon, the district unit of AASU held a protest march where leaders, including sports secretary Mriganka Shekhar Bharali Hazarika and district president Simanta Barua, demanded immediate intervention to curb soaring prices.
In Tamulpur, members of the student body, led by the Tamulpur Regional Students’ Union under the Chirang District Students’ Union, organised another rally through the town demanding urgent measures to reduce inflation.
Speaking to the media, AASU central secretary Dulujit Das said, “The continuous rise in prices of fuel, medicines and daily necessities has created immense hardship for people across the state.”
