Mizoram Rolls Out ‘No Official Vehicle Day’ and WFH Measures Amid Fuel-Saving Push

The state government has introduced staggered office timings, remote work for 20% staff and restrictions on official travel as part of austerity measures linked to the West Asia crisis

Aizwal: Mizoram has announced a series of austerity and fuel-conservation measures, including a weekly “No Official Vehicle Day”, staggered office hours and partial work-from-home arrangements, amid concerns over global instability triggered by the ongoing West Asia crisis.

The directives, issued by the state’s General Administration Department, came into effect on Thursday following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal for fuel conservation and economic discipline.

Under the new policy, every Wednesday will be observed as “No Official Vehicle Day”, with government employees encouraged to use public transport or walk instead of relying on official vehicles.

Additionally, departments have been instructed to implement work-from-home arrangements for 20 per cent of employees. However, essential sectors such as healthcare, emergency services, water supply, power, transport and law enforcement have been kept outside the purview of the restrictions.

To further reduce fuel consumption and traffic congestion, the government has divided office functioning into two shifts. While departments such as agriculture, education and power will operate from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, departments including home, health and disaster management will function from 10:30 am to 6 pm.

The government has also advised departments to prioritise video conferencing, minimise official travel and avoid non-essential expenditure. Chief Minister Lalduhoma, ministers and senior officials have additionally been asked to reduce vehicle convoys.
