The Congress leader has been asked to appear before investigators in Guwahati on May 23 as the probe linked to remarks on Riniki Bhuyan Sarma expands

Guwahati: The Assam Crime Branch has summoned senior Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Randeep Singh Surjewala for questioning in connection with the ongoing investigation into the alleged passport controversy involving Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, wife of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
According to officials, Surjewala has been directed to appear before investigators in Guwahati on May 23 as part of the expanding probe into statements made by Congress leaders regarding alleged irregularities linked to passport records and citizenship issues.
The investigation began after Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera publicly raised questions concerning Riniki Bhuyan Sarma. Following those remarks, the Crime Branch registered criminal cases against Khera under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Sources said the summons issued to Surjewala follows developments during Khera’s earlier questioning, which reportedly continued for nearly eight hours. Investigators are now examining related statements and the wider political allegations connected to the matter.
Meanwhile, Khera has challenged the Gauhati High Court’s April 24 order rejecting his anticipatory bail plea in the case. After appearing before the Crime Branch earlier this month, the Congress leader avoided discussing details of the investigation but maintained that the party would continue its political opposition against the BJP-led Assam government.
The latest development has further intensified the political confrontation between the ruling BJP and the Congress in Assam.
