“I Am Innocent, Will Fully Cooperate”, Pema Khandu on CBI Probe: Civil Society Demands Resignation

Arunachal CM backs Supreme Court-directed Central Bureau of Investigation enquiry; protest led by Byabang Joram intensifies in Itanagar

Itanagar: Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu on May 5 asserted his innocence amid a preliminary enquiry ordered by the Central Bureau of Investigation into corruption allegations. Emphasising transparency, he said the state government would “extend full cooperation” to ensure a fair investigation and establish the facts.

At the same time, responding to calls for his resignation from the Arunachal Civil Society, Khandu defended democratic expression. He stated that peaceful protests are a “fundamental right,” provided they remain ethical and non-violent.

Referring to past developments, the Chief Minister noted that when the issue had reached the Supreme Court of India two years ago, he chose not to engage a personal lawyer, underscoring his confidence in his innocence. Moreover, he argued that his government’s decade-long focus on reforms and development reflects a commitment to clean governance, while also describing the allegations as “politically motivated.”

Meanwhile, pressure continues to mount on the ground. Byabang Joram has launched a three-day mass sit-in dharna in Itanagar, demanding Khandu’s resignation on moral grounds. The organisation maintains that stepping down would allow the probe to proceed “free and fair,” without perceived influence.

As the enquiry progresses, the episode has sharpened the debate between accountability and political intent in the state.
