Takes “full responsibility” for poll outcome as BJP-led alliance secures third straight term in Assam.

Guwahati: In the aftermath of a decisive electoral setback, All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary in charge of Assam, Jitendra Singh, stepped down from his position on May 4, hours after the BJP-led NDA returned to power with a commanding majority.
In his resignation letter to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Singh announced that he was stepping down “with immediate effect,” accepting accountability for the party’s performance. “The results are deeply disappointing, and I take full responsibility for my role,” he stated, adding that despite sustained efforts, the party “could not meet the expectations of the people of Assam.”
The NDA secured 102 out of 126 Assembly seats, comfortably crossing the majority mark, with the BJP alone winning 82 seats. The result paves the way for Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to return for a third consecutive term.

Singh’s resignation comes amid growing internal dissatisfaction within the Assam Congress, where concerns had been raised over strategy, grassroots mobilisation, and overall election preparedness. The outcome has further intensified scrutiny of the party’s organisational structure in the state.
However, Singh maintained a measured tone, expressing gratitude to the party leadership for their trust and acknowledging the support of party workers and the people of Assam. “I remain committed to the values and vision of the Congress Party and will continue to contribute in any capacity,” he wrote.
The development underscores the Congress party’s continuing struggle to regain political ground in the Northeast.
