Dibang Project Crosses Key Milestone as Two Diversion Tunnels Inaugurated

New tunnels to fast-track dam construction; officials highlight engineering effort and coordination

Itanagar: In a major step forward for one of India’s largest hydroelectric ventures, two critical diversion tunnels of the 2,880 MW Dibang Multipurpose Project were inaugurated. The development marks a turning point, as diverting the river flow is essential before full-scale dam construction can begin.

Built by Larsen & Toubro (L&T Construction), the tunnels are expected to significantly accelerate the next phase of the project. Narendra Kumar, Executive Director of the Dibang Multipurpose Project, acknowledged the timely completion and said it would “substantially speed up construction activities,” thereby improving overall execution.

At the same time, L&T officials underlined the complexity of the work. Pradip Kumar Mahanti, Administrative Head and Industrial Relations at L&T, pointed to the difficult terrain and challenging site conditions. Despite these constraints, he noted that the team maintained steady progress. He also credited NHPC Limited for effective project management and coordination, which played a crucial role in keeping timelines on track.

Once completed, the Dibang Multipurpose Project in Arunachal Pradesh is expected to deliver multiple benefits. In addition to boosting power generation capacity, it will support flood control and contribute to regional infrastructure and economic development.

Consequently, the successful commissioning of the diversion tunnels signals strong momentum for the project and reinforces its strategic importance.
