Continuous rainfall prompts authorities to suspend classes in several regions, while some southern districts remain unaffected

Aizwal: Persistent rainfall across Mizoram on Tuesday, April 28, forced authorities to close educational institutions in nine districts, as officials moved to safeguard students from weather-related risks. The decision followed continuous downpours that have disrupted daily life and raised concerns over waterlogging, slippery roads and possible landslides.
School Education Director Angela Zothanpuii said district administrations, including Aizawl, Kolasib, Lunglei and Mamit, opted for a temporary suspension of classes. She noted that the closures were a preventive measure amid “ongoing adverse weather conditions.”
However, the situation was not uniform across the state. Schools in the southern districts of Hnahthial and Lawngtlai remained open, as weather conditions there showed relative improvement.
Meanwhile, rainfall data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) highlighted the intensity of the showers. Serchhip recorded the highest rainfall at 70.5 mm, followed by Hnahthial with 55 mm. Siaha and Aizawl reported 37.5 mm and 36 mm, respectively, while Khawzawl received 30 mm. Mamit logged 25.9 mm, Kolasib 25 mm, Lawngtlai 17.5 mm and Lunglei 2.2 mm.
Looking ahead, weather officials have forecast light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning through the day. Authorities, therefore, continue to monitor the situation closely and may revise measures depending on further developments.
