“Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat”: PM Modi Calls Sikkim a Symbol of Unity at 50th Statehood Event

At the Gangtok ceremony, PM stresses national unity, praises Sikkim’s culture and cleanliness, and rolls out major development initiatives

Gangtok: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Tuesday, April 28, described Sikkim as a living example of national unity while addressing the state’s 50th Statehood celebrations at Paljor Stadium in Gangtok. At a time when “attempts are being made to divide the country along linguistic, regional and social lines,” he said the state reflects the spirit of “Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat.”

Praising the cultural showcase, he noted, “In this small programme, they beautifully presented the diversity and unity of our nation,” and urged wider broadcast of the event. He also described Sikkim as “Purv ka garv,” highlighting its natural beauty, serenity and rich biodiversity.

During his visit, the Prime Minister launched and laid the foundation for projects worth over Rs 4,000 crore across sectors, including infrastructure, connectivity, healthcare, education, tourism and agriculture. According to official details, the initiatives aim to accelerate inclusive growth and strengthen the state’s long-term development.

The Prime Minister also took a swipe at previous governments, alleging that Sikkim’s development had been delayed under Congress rule. He said several of the initiatives being launched now “could have been implemented much earlier,” adding that the state’s growth has gained momentum in recent years.

Modi also commended the people for maintaining cleanliness, saying, “I salute all of you… the people of Sikkim are true brand ambassadors of nature,” while encouraging citizens across India to visit the state.

Referring to his earlier missed visit due to bad weather, he added that attending the celebrations in person fulfilled a long-standing wish.
