Congress Flags “Unconstitutional” Buffer Zones in Manipur: Seeks Urgent Central Intervention

MP A. Bimol Akoijam alleges administrative lapses; party demands compensation, probe completion and dialogue

New Delhi: The Indian National Congress (INC) sharpened its criticism of the Centre over the continuing unrest in Manipur, calling for immediate corrective measures, financial relief, and a structured peace dialogue.

Addressing the media, Inner Manipur MP A. Bimol Akoijam raised concerns over the creation of “buffer zones,” alleging they lack any legal backing. “I was stopped from entering my own constituency without any formal order. This is unconstitutional,” he said, questioning the legitimacy of such restrictions.

He also pointed to serious security lapses in the April 7 attack in Bishnupur district, where two children were killed. Notably, he claimed that despite the presence of a police station and CRPF unit nearby, forces responded only after a significant delay, calling it “a careless response and a serious administrative failure.”

Meanwhile, the Congress submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi through Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla. The party demanded swift investigation into recent violence, strict action against perpetrators, and the release of inquiry findings related to the conflict that began in May 2023.

In addition, it sought compensation for victims, an economic package, and measures to restore normal life. Congress leaders also stressed the need for “safe and unhindered access” to essential services.

State Congress chief Okram Ibobi Singh echoed these concerns, stating that “many lives that could have been saved have been lost,” underscoring the urgency for decisive action.
