Zubeen Garg Case: Fast-Track Court Frames Charges Against Seven Accused

Court clears trial proceedings in Zubeen Garg death case after all seven accused deny charges, witness hearings from June 8

Guwahati: A fast-track court in Assam on May 26 formally framed charges against all seven accused in the Zubeen Garg death case, marking a major development as the matter now moves into the trial stage.

The proceedings were conducted before the court of Judge Sharmila Bhuyan, where the accused denied all allegations and chose to face trial.

Special Public Prosecutor Ziaul Kamar said the court found sufficient grounds to proceed after examining the chargesheet and hearing arguments from both sides. “The charges have been framed as per the investigation carried out by Assam Police. The court has accepted that there is enough material to continue trial proceedings,” he told reporters outside the courtroom.

According to Kamar, conspiracy-related charges were framed against all accused except Sandipan Garg. He further stated that no miscellaneous hearings are expected before June 8, when witness examination is scheduled to begin.

The accused in the case are Shyamkanu Mahanta, Siddhartha Sharma, Sandipan Garg, Shekharjyoti Goswami, Amritprava Mahanta, Nandeswar Bora and Paresh Baishya.

Reacting after the hearing, Garima Saikia Garg said the trial process could be lengthy due to the large number of witnesses listed in the case. “There are around 394 witnesses mentioned. Not all may be examined, but the process will now move forward gradually,” she said.

With charges now formally framed, the court is set to begin full trial proceedings in one of Assam’s most closely watched cases.
