Zubeen Garg Case: Gauhati HC Denies Bail to Shyamkanu Mahanta

Fast-track court reserves order on bail pleas of four other accused as witness examination in the high-profile case is set to begin from June 8

Guwahati: The Gauhati High Court on May 29rejected the bail plea of Shyamkanu Mahanta, one of the key accused in the death case of Assamese singer Zubeen Garg, further tightening legal proceedings in the high-profile matter.

A bench led by Justice Mitali Thakuria dismissed Mahanta’s petition after hearing arguments from both the defence and the Assam government. The accused had approached the High Court after his earlier bail application was rejected by the special fast-track court.

Mahanta, an organiser associated with the Northeast Festival, was named in the SIT chargesheet filed in December 2025 in connection with the singer’s death in Singapore on September 19, 2025.

Meanwhile, the fast-track court of Justice Sharmila Bhuyan completed hearings on the bail applications of four other accused, Amritprabha Mahanta, Sandipan Garg, Paresh Baishya and Nandeshwar Bora. The court has reserved its verdict and is expected to pronounce the order on June 8.

Earlier, charges were formally framed against all seven accused in the case, with murder charges invoked against four of them.

The trial is now set to enter a crucial phase, as the fast-track court will begin recording witness testimonies on a day-to-day basis from June 8.

The case has continued to attract significant public attention across Assam due to the involvement of several prominent individuals and the circumstances surrounding the singer’s death.
