Justice Soumitra Saikia-led panel to examine undertrial prisoners till April 17 amid tight security and virtual monitoring

Guwahati: The one-member inquiry commission probing the alleged death of Zubeen Garg has initiated a crucial phase of investigation by recording statements of two undertrial prisoners lodged in Haflong Sub Jail in Assam’s Dima Hasao district.
The commission, headed by Justice Soumitra Saikia, is examining Shekhar Jyoti Goswami and Amritprabha Mahanta in connection with a CID case registered in 2025. The process, which began on April 13, is scheduled to continue till April 17.
Officials said the inquiry team reached Haflong a day earlier and is operating under strict security arrangements. The proceedings are being supported through a hybrid system, enabling Justice Saikia to participate virtually from Guwahati while ensuring full documentation of testimonies. “All necessary arrangements, including videography and record preservation, have been put in place,” an official source said.
District authorities have been directed to prioritise logistical support, including accommodation and security, while a lady Executive Magistrate has been assigned for the examination of the female accused.
The commission is being assisted by legal and administrative personnel, including prosecutors and advocates, as it seeks to piece together the sequence of events surrounding the high-profile case.
The questioning of the accused marks a significant step in the ongoing effort to establish clarity in a case that continues to draw public attention across Assam.
