Sujata Gurung Chowdhury Moves NCW Against Assam CM: Alleges Defamation and Online Harassment

Guwahati candidate Kunki Chowdhury’s mother seeks a probe into alleged remarks and viral content during the election campaign

Guwahati: A complaint before the National Commission for Women (NCW) has added a new dimension to Assam’s ongoing election discourse, with Sujata Gurung Chowdhury, the mother of Guwahati Central Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) candidate Kunki Chowdhury, alleging that she was unfairly drawn into political controversy and subjected to sustained online harassment.

Chowdhury described herself as a non-political individual who became a target during campaign rhetoric. In her submission, she accused Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of making “false and defamatory statements” that, she claims, triggered widespread abuse on social media.

Moreover, she stated that remarks made during a campaign event portrayed her in a misleading manner, including allegations related to her beliefs and personal choices. “These claims are entirely baseless and intended to damage my reputation,” she asserted in the complaint.

Addressing a photograph that circulated online, Chowdhury clarified that it was taken at the International Church of Cannabis in Denver and featured an artistic installation, not food. Supporting documentation from the venue has also been cited to reinforce her claim.

Adding to the feud, she further alleged that personal images, including those featuring her minor son, were shared without consent, alongside manipulated visuals and AI-generated content. Calling it a violation of her dignity and privacy, she said the episode caused “severe emotional distress” to her family.

The petition urges the NCW to order an inquiry, ensure the removal of misleading content, and provide protection to her and her child. Copies have also been sent to state authorities for further action.
