The 1994-batch IPS Officer was found unconscious at the police headquarters in Agartala. Authorities are awaiting post-mortem findings to determine the exact cause of death

Agartala: Tripura Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Dhankar was found dead at the Police Headquarters (PHQ) in Agartala on Monday, July 20. The 1994-batch IPS officer was reportedly found unconscious in the bathroom of his office and rushed to Govind Ballabh Pant (GB Pant) Hospital, where doctors declared him dead at 12:48 pm.
Doctors said Dhankar was brought to the emergency department without a pulse or blood pressure. “Despite continuous CPR for 48 minutes, there was no response,” said Dr Bhowmik, adding that the post-mortem examination will determine the exact cause of death.
While preliminary reports have suggested suicide, the Tripura Police and state administration have not officially confirmed the cause. A magisterial inquiry has been ordered.
Chief Minister Manik Saha, Chief Secretary J.K. Sinha and senior officials visited the hospital following the incident. Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Choudhury demanded a judicial inquiry, saying the circumstances surrounding Dhankar’s death must be thoroughly investigated.
Tripura BJP president Abhishek Debroy also expressed grief, stating that the truth would emerge after the post-mortem.
