“Three Years On, Manipur Is Still Burning”: Gaurav Gogoi Questions Centre’s Response to Crisis

The Congress MP raises concerns over renewed ethnic violence, displacement and delayed investigations, calling for accountability, rehabilitation and lasting peace in Manipur

Guwahati: Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi has criticised the Centre and the Manipur government over the prolonged ethnic crisis in the state, saying civilians continue to face insecurity, displacement and recurring violence nearly three years after the conflict erupted in May 2023.

In a social media post on X, Gogoi said fresh fault lines were emerging between communities, with more than 40 people reportedly killed in Kuki-Naga violence since February. He also flagged renewed tensions between Kuki-Zo and Meitei communities.

“The wounds of May 2023 remain unhealed,” Gogoi said, referring to more than 300 deaths and around 24,000 people who, according to his post, remain in relief camps.

Questioning the government’s response, the Congress leader criticised the delay in the removal of former Chief Minister N Biren Singh and the imposition of President’s Rule in February 2025. He also questioned the progress of rehabilitation measures and investigations into the violence.

Gogoi sought updates on the findings of the Supreme Court-appointed Justice Gita Mittal Committee, the Peace Committee announced by Union Home Minister Amit Shah in June 2023, and the repeatedly delayed report of the Judicial Commission of Inquiry. He also questioned why an all-party meeting sought by the INDIA bloc had not been scheduled.

“Three years on, the people of Manipur deserve answers, not silence and delays,” Gogoi said, urging the governments to ensure civilian safety, impartial investigations, meaningful rehabilitation and sustained dialogue to restore peace.
