The Congress MP questioned the SIT’s handling of Zubeen Garg’s death and accused the Election Commission of losing its constitutional authority under Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar

Guwahati: Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi on October 23 criticised the Assam government over its investigation into singer Zubeen Garg’s death, alleging that the Special Investigation Team (SIT) had failed to deliver justice. He also demanded the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, accusing the Election Commission of India (ECI) of being stripped of its constitutional authority.
Referring to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s repeated statements in the Assam Assembly that Garg was murdered, Gogoi questioned whether the SIT had placed all relevant facts and evidence before the court. He said successive bail orders for those arrested in the case had fuelled public concern.
“There is apprehension among people that the SIT formed by Himanta Biswa Sarma was not constituted to deliver justice to Zubeen Garg, but to protect those connected with Zubeen Garg’s death,” he alleged.
Gogoi described the case as the biggest setback of Sarma’s political career, citing other allegations against the Chief Minister.
On the Election Commission, Gogoi accused Gyanesh Kumar of acting in favour of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah rather than upholding the Constitution. “That person, Gyanesh Kumar, has to go,” he said.
Gogoi also announced that the INDIA bloc was planning to hold a mock Parliament on October 28, with details yet to be finalised. He said the Congress’s ‘Vote Bachao, Desh Bachao’ rallies were continuing across the country.
The Congress leader further criticised Modi for repeatedly targeting Rahul Gandhi in his speeches, arguing that the government should focus on public concerns, including those affecting students, the middle class and people in Manipur. He also accused the BJP of lacking political vision and alleged electoral malpractice.
