The Congress MP alleges a political understanding between the BJP and AIUDF and questions the Election Commission’s handling of complaints during the campaign

Guwahati: Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi on Friday alleged that the outcome of the Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election reflected a political understanding between Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal, describing it as a “jugalbandi” between the two leaders.
Reacting to the result, Gogoi claimed that both parties had focused on defeating the Congress. He also alleged that the Election Commission of India (ECI) had failed to act on complaints raised by the Congress during the campaign. “Today’s result is the outcome of the ‘jugalbandi’ of both,” Gogoi said.
The Congress MP also questioned the BJP’s decision to field Devasish Sharma, alleging that the party had been in contact with him while he was in government service. Gogoi said the Congress had submitted relevant material to the ECI and questioned why action had not been taken.
He further accused the BJP and AIUDF of invoking communal issues during campaigning and criticised the poll body for its alleged failure to act against such appeals.
Gogoi called for an inquiry into the ECI’s role and urged Congress workers and supporters to consolidate the party’s votes to counter what he described as a nexus involving the BJP, AIUDF and the poll body. The allegations remain claims made by the Congress MP. An ECI response was not available at the time of publication.
