Climate activist ends indefinite fast after meeting Union Ministers J.P. Nadda and Jitendra Singh, says details of the agreement will be shared soon
New Delhi: Climate activist and educationist Sonam Wangchuk on Thursday, July 23, ended his 26-day indefinite hunger strike after meeting Union Ministers J.P. Nadda and Jitendra Singh at Medanta Hospital in Gurugram.
The ministers reportedly met Wangchuk after discussions with Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Wangchuk formally broke his fast in the presence of the ministers and his wife, Gitanjali Angmo.
“I’m grateful and happy to break my fast. Thank you,” Wangchuk said before expressing gratitude to his wife for standing by him throughout the protest. In a post on X, Wangchuk said the decision followed prolonged negotiations with the Centre.
“I finally broke my fast after 26 days… This was done after a long negotiation on various conditions and in view of possible violence in the country,” he wrote. He added that he would soon share details of the discussions and urged supporters to maintain peace.
Following the announcement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi wished Wangchuk good health and urged him to follow medical advice. The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), which had backed the agitation, welcomed his decision but said its protest at Jantar Mantar would continue until Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigns over the alleged NEET-UG 2026 paper leak.
Wangchuk began his hunger strike on June 28, demanding education reforms and accountability over alleged examination irregularities.
